5 Rules for Measuring Internet Speed Correctly (Mbps vs MB/s)
The difference between Mbps and MB/s, what download, upload and ping mean, and how to get an accurate speed test.
Why This Guide Matters
Step-by-step Implementation:
Mbps and MB/s are not the same
Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). File downloads often show megabytes per second (MB/s). One byte is 8 bits, so 80 Mbps is at most about 10 MB/s.
Download, upload and ping
Download is how fast data arrives, for streaming and downloads. Upload is how fast you send data, needed for video calls and uploads. Ping (latency) is how many milliseconds a signal takes to go and return; lower is better for gaming and calls.
How to test properly
Test over a wired (LAN) connection if you can, or stand near the router. Pause other devices and downloads. Test several times at different hours and look at the average.
